Microneedling Aftercare: The Essential Guide

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, has become a popular treatment for rejuvenating the skin. This minimally invasive procedure uses tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the top layer of skin.  Your body’s natural healing response kicks in, stimulating collagen and elastin production, leading to firmer, smoother, and more youthful-looking skin.

Microneedling offers numerous benefits, but achieving optimal results requires proper aftercare.  The first week after treatment is crucial for allowing your skin to heal and for the collagen production process to begin. Here’s a comprehensive guide on what to avoid during the first week after your microneedling session in Langley:

Sun Exposure:

  • Minimize Sun Exposure.  Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun are damaging to your skin, especially after microneedling when it’s in a vulnerable state. Avoid direct sunlight for at least a week after treatment.
  • Sunscreen is Essential.  Even on cloudy days, UV rays can penetrate the clouds and damage your skin. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher religiously every day. Reapply every two hours, especially if you’re outdoors.
  • Consider Sun Protection Clothing.  When venturing outside, wear protective clothing like hats, sunglasses, and long sleeves to shield your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

Heat and Sweat:

  • Saunas, Steam Rooms, and Hot Baths.  High temperatures can irritate your skin and increase blood flow, potentially leading to inflammation and discomfort after microneedling.  Avoid saunas, steam rooms, and hot baths for at least a week after treatment.
  • Strenuous Exercise.  Strenuous exercise can significantly elevate your heart rate and body temperature. This can increase sweating and irritate the microneedling wounds. Opt for gentle activities like walking or yoga during the first week.

Skin Irritation:

  • Harsh Skincare Products.  Your skin will be more sensitive after microneedling.  Avoid using harsh skincare products such as those containing retinols, glycolic acid, or other exfoliating ingredients.  These can irritate the microneedling wounds and hinder healing.
  • Physical Exfoliation.  Skip physical exfoliation methods like scrubs or brushes during the first week. These can further irritate the microneedling wounds and disrupt the healing process.
  • Makeup Application.  While makeup application isn’t strictly forbidden after a week, it’s best to minimize it.  Heavy makeup can clog pores and hinder healing.  If you do choose to wear makeup, opt for mineral-based makeup and ensure your brushes are clean to avoid introducing bacteria.

Picking and Touching:

What to Expect During the First Week:

  • Redness and Swelling.  It’s normal to experience some redness and swelling after microneedling. This typically peaks within the first 24-48 hours and gradually subsides within a few days.
  • Tightness and Dryness.  Your skin may feel tight and dry after microneedling.  Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to soothe and hydrate your skin.
  • Slight Peeling.  Some people experience mild flaking or peeling of the skin within a few days after microneedling. This is a normal part of the healing process and should resolve within a week.
