What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation refers to areas of skin that become darker than the surrounding skin. This common condition occurs when melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color, is overproduced in certain spots.  Hyperpigmentation can appear as patches, spots, or cover larger areas, and it can affect people of all skin tones.

There are several types of hyperpigmentation. Sunspots (also known as age spots),  melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark marks left after acne or injury) are some of the most common.  Understanding the specific type of hyperpigmentation is essential in determining the best course of treatment.

What Causes Hyperpigmentation?

The most common cause of hyperpigmentation is excessive and unprotected sun exposure. When the skin absorbs harmful UV rays, it triggers melanin production as a defense mechanism. Over time, this excess melanin can concentrate in specific areas, leading to sunspots, melasma, or a generally uneven skin tone.

When the skin experiences inflammation or injury, as with acne, eczema, cuts, or burns, it can overproduce melanin as part of the healing process. This post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation often leaves dark spots or discoloration that can linger long after the original issue has resolved.

While sun exposure and inflammation are the primary drivers, several other factors contribute to hyperpigmentation:

  • Hormonal Fluctuations: Melasma, often called “the mask of pregnancy,” is triggered by hormonal shifts in pregnancy, menopause, or due to birth control.
  • Medications: Certain medications can increase photosensitivity (sensitivity to the sun) making skin more susceptible to darkening.
  • Medical Conditions: Some medical conditions, like Addison’s disease, can influence melanin production and lead to hyperpigmentation.

FAQs About Hyperpigmentation?

Common types include: sunspots (age spots), melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) which is caused by skin injury or inflammation.

Yes! The dark spots left behind after breakouts are classified as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Yes, particularly melasma, which is heavily influenced by hormonal changes in pregnancy, menopause, or due to birth control medications.

Some minor hyperpigmentation may gradually fade over time, but often treatment is needed for significant improvement.

Treatments include: topical creams (retinoids, hydroquinone, etc.), chemical peels, lasers, and microneedling. A dermatologist will recommend the best approach based on skin type and hyperpigmentation severity.

Some ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide, or licorice root may offer mild brightening effects. However, they typically won’t fully erase established hyperpigmentation. Professional treatments are often needed.

Diligent sun protection with broad-spectrum sunscreen and sun-protective clothing is the best defense, especially for preventing new spots or worsening existing ones.

Sunscreen helps minimize the darkening of melasma, but due to the hormonal component, it may not prevent it entirely.

With time and proper skincare, post-acne marks often fade significantly. However, some residual discoloration might remain, requiring professional treatments for full resolution.

I received a facial lifting treatment at the clinic (Inmode, sorry, I forgot the exact name). The clinic itself is very modern and new, with a great location that's conveniently close to the highway. The staff at the reception were super friendly and nice. The esthetician was very gentle during the treatment, and I almost fell asleep. Everything was very clean and well-managed. I'm definitely planning to go back there again.

Eve Therapy was recommended to me by a friend who attends Evergreen Rehab. I have been suffering from allergic dermatitis and breakouts for a few months and visited the clinic to get a consultation. The aesthetician recommended skin care treatments that would improve my skin during our brief consultation. I have received Acne Care, Aladdin Peeling, MTS, and IPL sessions which not only reduced my acne breakouts, but also helped fade my acne scars. I also purchased the famous SkinCeutical's vitamin C serum which also helped with my acne scars and brightening. I also received a couple of sessions of MiniFx which help to tone and slim my arms and outer thighs. Definitely recommend seeing Lily K for any skin concerns!!

I was only thinking about moisture management, but she gave me a consultation that was suitable for my skin condition, and they had a wedding package so i chose the wedding package with a happy heart. It's been a month since I took care of it, and I'm very satisfied and highly recommend it :)
